Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) FAQs

What is a Donor-Advised Fund?

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a charitable investment account where individuals can contribute cash, stocks, or other assets, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then make grant recommendations to qualified charities over time.

How does a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) work?

A Donor makes an irrevocable gift to a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) and receives a tax deduction for the year the gift is made. Once the contribution is made, the Sponsoring Organization has legal control over the funds and the Donor can make grant recommendations to the charity of their choice.

What is a Donor-Advised Fund Provider or Sponsoring Organization?

· A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) Sponsoring Organization is a 501(c)(3) public charity that manages and administers individual DAF accounts, allowing donors to make charitable contributions and recommend grants to qualified charities.

· Donors retain advisory privileges for the distribution of funds and the investment of assets in the account and recommend grants to qualified charities.

· The Sponsoring Organization is responsible for ensuring that funds are used for charitable purposes.

What are the benefits of a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)?

· A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) Charitable Investment Account is simple to establish and is easily accessible.

· Donor-Advised Funds (DAF) offer flexibility in charitable giving, allowing donors to make contributions and then recommend grants to charities at the donor’s pace.

· Donors receive an immediate tax deduction for their contributions to the Donor-Advised Fund (DAF), and the assets within the Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) can grow tax-free.

Are there rules to owning a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)?

The IRS has specific guidelines around the kinds of organizations that are eligible to receive grants as well as the purposes these grants can serve. For example, grants can only be made to qualified charities and cannot be made to a person, or the donor cannot receive more than an incidental benefit, so it cannot be used for the admission price for an event.

Please check with your financial advisor for rules, guidelines, and recommendations for your portfolio, including Donor-Advised Funds (DAF).

What is the difference between a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) and a direct donation?

The Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) Donor receives tax documentation from the Sponsoring Organization of the Donor-Advised Fund (DAF), while a direct donation receives tax documentation from the charity.
