Holiday Tent History
In 1982 when Rev. Morris E. Hintzman began serving at Metropolitan Ministries, there was no formal holiday assistance program in Tampa. Families who came for help during the year inquired about getting a turkey for a traditional holiday meal and some toys for their children. Morris and the Metro staff were determined to meet the need for several hundred families the first year, and the community responded and donated turkeys, toys, and volunteered their time.
Today, what we’re doing is not just a holiday assistance program, it’s a ministry with a year-round mission. This year, with the help of our holiday partners and community supporters, we will alleviate the suffering for 18,000 families in Hillsborough, 5,000 in Pinellas, and 7,000 in Pasco. Hope starts with a meal, a conversation, a moment of connection, and care. Hope is here.
