Dramatic transformation: Kay’s story
Kay, a 34-year-old mother of four, didn’t feel especially valued or appreciated. After she lost her job during the COVID-19 pandemic, her life went downhill fast. Unable to renew her lease, she lost her home. Then her verbally abusive, drug-addicted ex petitioned the courts to have her kids taken away from her – and somehow was granted custody.
Homeless and depressed, Kay struggled mightily with only her young nephew to care for.
“It wasn’t easy, but I didn’t give up!”
Soon after, she found Metropolitan Ministries and applied to join our residential program.
A path to self-sufficiency
Knowing that stability was the first thing Kay needed, we provided her with a place to stay, food to eat, and a path to self-sufficiency.
After several weeks of emotional and spiritual guidance, Kay got back on her feet. She also got her children back from the unstable living situation they had been caught up in.
Embracing the second chance she was being given, Kay set out to rebuild her family life. She learned how to use public transportation to run errands and to get her kids to school and their appointments and was on time for every job interview, eventually accepting a position as a medical assistant.
While her kids were in school (where they had access to after-school help), Kay was also studying a lot. She learned how to repair her debt, manage her finances, and help her kids learn about needs versus wants.
But the blessings didn’t stop there.
New blessings
Once Kay graduated from our program, we were able to help her find affordable housing and referred her to a local nonprofit that provided her with a car to get to and from work.
“Through all my sadness, this was another sign of hope,” she says. “My kids and I are beyond grateful.”
She continues, “As I reflect on all the things that I was able to accomplish while living at Metropolitan Ministries, I must say, it was a lot. Thank you, Metropolitan Ministries’ donors, for helping me reach my goal of becoming self-sufficient.”
Because of you, Kay has regained her dignity and self-worth and believes she is now living the life that God had intended for her all along.
Thank you for making such a dramatic transformation possible through your generous giving.
